Driver-facing cameras used to be a novelty. Now they are becoming a serious safety layer. These small lenses watch the driver, not the road. The goal is simple. Catch distraction or drowsiness before it turns into a crash. Automakers pair this hardware with hands-free driving systems, so a camera checks that the human is still paying attention.
This list covers eight vehicles that use this technology in very different ways. Some are affordable family SUVs. Others are six-figure luxury flagships or full-size pickups. A few use the camera purely for safety monitoring. Others also use it for biometric authentication.

It’s not a quick SUV, but it’s a steady, predictable one. The engine pairs with a CVT tuned to feel like a traditional automatic. Symmetrical all-wheel drive comes standard across the lineup.

5. BMW 7 Series / i7
BMW’s Driving Assistant Professional package uses a driver-facing camera to enable hands-free highway driving. It watches for prolonged distraction or drowsiness before disabling assistance features.
Every 2024 7 Series configuration includes the Active Driving Assistant suite, covering frontal collision warnings, lane departure alerts, and blind spot detection. The camera-based monitoring builds on top of that base layer.
The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-change assistance, evasive steering, emergency stop support, and a hands-free highway driving feature. That last item depends heavily on the interior camera confirming driver attentiveness.
The 7 Series spans gas, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric i7 variants. The base 740i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six mated to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 375 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque.
Buyers wanting a V8 have that option too. The 760i xDrive uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 536 horsepower, with 553 lb-ft of torque. This is a genuinely large luxury sedan, sitting close to the S-Class in footprint.

6. Tesla Model 3
Tesla added its cabin camera to every Model 3 built after mid-2021, and by 2024 it plays an active safety role. A diesel alternative trades peak power for low-end pull. The 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel produces 305 horsepower but 495 lb-ft of torque, arriving as low as 2,750 rpm. As a full-size truck, the Sierra dwarfs most vehicles on this list in outright footprint.

Polestar built driver monitoring into the 3 from day one, using dual cameras rather than a single sensor. Two closed-loop driver monitoring cameras bring eye-tracking technology from Smart Eye to a Polestar for the first time, geared toward safer driving.
The redundancy matters for reliability. The cameras monitor the driver’s eyes and can trigger warning messages, sounds, and even an emergency stop function when detecting a distracted, drowsy, or disconnected driver.
This is a genuinely proactive system. Rather than just warning the driver, it can bring the SUV to a controlled stop if there’s no response at all. Power comes from a dual-motor setup with two output levels. The Long Range Dual Motor uses a pair of 360-kW motors producing 489 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque.
Buyers wanting sharper acceleration have an upgrade path. The Performance Pack version uses a pair of 380-kW motors, raising output to 517 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque. The Polestar 3 sits in the mid-size luxury SUV class, wide and low for its segment.
