The renowned Ferrari “Colombo” V-12 engine has powered some of the most iconic and coveted automobiles in history, such as the 250, 275, 330, and 365 GTB/4.

While many enthusiasts may never have the opportunity to experience one firsthand, RM Sotheby’s presents a unique offering: an engine dyno previously in possession of the Prancing Horse, complete with a fully operational V-12 nestled within.

Originally procured from the Ferrari factory in Maranello by Belgian dealer Jacques Swaters in 1953, this dyno boasts a rich history. Initially utilized by Ferrari for testing and validation purposes, it then served Swaters’ shop faithfully for three decades.

Since 2008, the dyno has exchanged hands among a select group of collectors, maintaining its functionality throughout.

Fitted with a 4.0-liter Colombo V-12 sourced from a 330 GT 2+2, bearing the serial number 5263 and featuring the coveted triple Weber carburetor setup, this engine exemplifies Ferrari’s engineering excellence.

Accompanied by a complete exhaust system with four tips, it emits a symphony befitting its storied lineage. Moreover, an external radiator ensures optimal operating temperatures during testing.

Ferrari Meticulously cared for over the years, the engine retains its pristine condition, reminiscent of its original state six decades ago. Mounted on caster wheels, the entire assembly offers portability, allowing it to be maneuvered within one’s workshop.

For Ferrari enthusiasts, few acquisitions rival the prestige of owning a factory engine dyno used during the brand’s formative years, especially when coupled with its iconic powertrain. Reflecting its rarity and historical significance, this remarkable find commands a substantial investment.

RM Sotheby’s estimates its value to range between $125,000 and $175,000. Considering that Ferrari’s most economical model currently exceeds $225,000, acquiring a Colombo-equipped dyno represents an unparalleled opportunity for aficionados to enhance their collections.
