BMW famously resisted calling it an SUV at all. BMW reportedly worked hard to have it referred to as an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) instead of an SUV, prioritizing driving feel over rugged capability. That branding stuck.

BMW chose to route 60% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels, making it feel as close as possible to the company’s rear-wheel drive sedans. That decision defined the “performance SUV” concept. The X5 proved SUVs could handle like sports sedans, inspiring an entire genre of performance-focused rivals.

Financially, the Cayenne mattered enormously. Its profitability directly funded future Porsche sports car development, essentially keeping the brand independent during a difficult period.
