General Motors has officially pulled the plug on the Chevrolet Silverado 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD trucks. The announcement has sent ripples across the commercial trucking industry in the United States.

These were not standard consumer pickups, they were purpose-built commercial giants designed for the most demanding jobs. Construction firms, utility companies, towing operators, and heavy freight businesses depended heavily on these machines.

Production of the full medium-duty Silverado range will permanently end on September 30, 2026. Buyers now have just months left to secure one before the lineup disappears from dealerships for good.

A Partnership That Could Not Survive

The discontinuation is directly tied to the collapse of GM’s manufacturing agreement with International Trucks, formerly known as Navistar. The deal, first signed in 2015, had both companies jointly developing and assembling trucks at a plant in Springfield, Ohio.

When the contract reached its end this year, General Motors chose not to renew it. That single decision immediately sealed the fate of the entire Silverado medium-duty lineup.

International’s own CV Series trucks will halt production on September 10, 2026. The Silverado HD models will follow just three weeks later, on September 30.

The Springfield Plant Is Gone Too

Adding further finality to the situation, the Springfield, Ohio, facility has already changed hands entirely. Canadian defense contractor Roshel purchased the plant earlier in 2026, eliminating any realistic chance of GM resuming production there. The factory had been building commercial trucks and buses at that location since 1961.

Its departure from the GM supply chain represents a significant loss of American commercial manufacturing capacity. There is currently no alternative facility lined up to replace it. GM has made no announcement about finding a new production partner for this segment.

Sales Numbers Were Deeply Troubling

The sales data behind this decision paints a grim picture for the Silverado HD lineup. Chevrolet sold only 8,341 medium-duty trucks throughout the entire year of 2025, a drop of 19.2 percent from the prior year.

The situation worsened sharply in early 2026, with just 1,273 units sold through the first quarter alone. That represented a devastating 37.4 percent year-over-year decline in just three months.

Meanwhile, Ford sold 2,331 units of its competing F-650 and F-750 trucks during that same first quarter of 2026. GM was selling fewer than half the units of its closest rival, making the exit increasingly inevitable.

The outgoing Silverado HD models were genuinely impressive commercial vehicles with serious engineering behind them. All three variants ran on a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 producing 350 horsepower and 750 pound-feet of torque.

Power was routed through a heavy-duty Allison six-speed automatic transmission built for demanding workloads. Gross vehicle weight ratings ranged from 14,001 pounds on the 4500 HD to a commanding 23,500 pounds on the top-spec 6500 HD. Buyers could choose from regular, double, or crew cab configurations with wheelbases stretching up to 243 inches.

What Happens to GM’s Commercial Lineup

General Motors will not exit the commercial truck market entirely following this discontinuation. The Chevrolet Low Cab Forward series, built on Isuzu platforms, will continue serving the medium-duty segment in Class 4 through Class 6 configurations.

However, these trucks serve a fundamentally different commercial need compared to the heavy chassis cab Silverados being retired. Ford now stands as the only major American automaker offering full-size heavy chassis cab trucks in this category.

GM has stated it is evaluating future portfolio options but has committed to nothing concrete, leaving the industry watching closely for its next move.
